Happy Fourth of July! If you are wondering what to bring that picnic you are going to today, check out Mark Bittman’s 101 picnic food suggestions. (And that this is late notice is no excuse not to bring a tasty dish to that picnic: each dish promises to be made in 20 minutes!)

I might have to revise my proclamation of the best NY ices (Ralph’s, followed by Court Pastry Shop). NYCNosh reports that my beloved old Avenue B haunt, NYC ICY has reopened in Hell’s Kitchen. Is it worth the extra cost per ice and a trip to midtown? I’ll let you know.

Any cooking show that sites both Sesame Street and John Woo movies among its influences is a must see in my book. [Grub Street]

This salad rocks and it keeps in the fridge! It’s healthy, refreshing, and so easy to make! You can prepare it in advance. Even E., a strict carniforous, (meat eater) loved it! Under-ripe peaches actually work the well as they don’t get soggy… go figure.

The NY York Times recipe was vague as to the proportions, so just wing it! You can’t go wrong!

4 TOMATOES AND PEACHES Toss together sliced seeded tomatoes and peaches, along with thinly sliced red onion and chopped cilantro or rosemary. Dress at the last minute with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Clarke, I didn’t even notice this recipe among Mark Bittman’s 101 picnic ideas! Now I have to try it. Yum!

  3. Erin says:

P.S. did you use the cilantro or rosemary?

  4. Clarke says:

Hi Erin, I used cilantro. I’m thinking I might try using really ripe peaches next time as the salad might have a sweeter taste.

This is Edmund writing from Clarke’s computer. Dagnabit, I am a carnivore not carniforous! This recipe is great and because quantities are not given it frees one from servitude to a piece of paper.
